White Rose Academies Trust Student Leadership Group: Diana Awards Mentoring Programme

The White Rose Academies Trust’s new Student Leadership Group met for the first time since being elected in their prestigious positions on Friday 13th July.

In their debut meeting, students from Leeds East Academy and Leeds West Academy joined peers from Leeds City Academy in their conference room to take part in training for the Diana Mentoring Programme.

During the day-long session, the pupils were involved in a range of activities including ice breakers, team building exercises and mentoring role plays.

The team-building activity was a true highlight for the pupils because they were encouraged to engage with new students who they haven’t met before. This broke down any barriers and has made the students more relaxed when they see each other again for TSLG meetings.

The Trust Student Leadership Group meet monthly in different academies to discuss important issues in the Trust and their Academies.

This elite group also attend several inspirational and extra-curricular trips. Previous trips have included visiting the Houses of Parliament, Google HQ and WE Day at Wembley.

A representative from The Diana Award Mentoring Programme taught the group mentoring tips and told them how to be good role-models for other pupils, who may be struggling in their academy. Pupils learnt a range of new skills that are important for this role, including listening, coping with sensitive information and giving sensible advice.

Trust Business Officer, Miss Whitaker, said: “It was really awe-inspiring to see the pupils come out of their shell towards the end of the day. I certainly saw the beginning of some great friendships starting to blossom.

"All the students behaved impeccably and I am sure they will make excellent mentors and leaders.”
