Mia McTighe

Mia was born and grew up in Coventry with her parents but moved to Leeds in 2018 for University. As an undergraduate student from the University of Leeds studying BA Linguistics and Phonetics, Mia is spending her third year fulfilling an Industrial Placement with the White Rose Academies Trust.

Due to her Linguistic skillset, Mia has an in depth understanding of the difficulties that a lot of our academies’ students face with English as an Additional language, and is passionate about ensuring that these pupils and their family continue to be fairly supported and recognised. In 2019 Mia began volunteering at Little London Primary School supporting year 5 EAL students with Maths and English, often staging 1 to 1 interventions. Mia found this role extremely rewarding and it inspired her to seek the opportunity to take an active role in projects that improve the education of young people in the community.

During her second year at University, Mia was elected President of her academic Society and gained experience of organising and leading events, while also creating incentives to attract members and subscriptions. This led to an increased interest in a professional career in Business and Marketing which she hopes to gain even more experience in through her year with the Trust.

Upon her return to University, Mia intends to use the insight she has gained into the Education Sector and its logistics to shape her final year studies and create a solid foundation for her career.

In her spare time, Mia enjoys fitness classes such as Yoga and Zumba and spending quality time with her family and dog Jasper.
