Lee Garner

Associate Assistant Principal


Lee is a former Police Officer and joined the British Transport Police in 2009. He worked in a variety of uniformed roles, including a period of time as an Acting Sergeant responsible for raising standards within Territorial Policing, before being appointed as a Detective Constable within the Criminal Investigation Department to qualify as an advanced investigator, specialising in dishonesty offences.

In 2015, as the divisional lead for theft reduction, he implemented a change program and oversaw overt and covert policing operations, which saw crime rates fall significantly.

Lee is qualified as an advanced investigative interviewer and has experience of working with the most vulnerable and deprived individuals and families; investigating serious and complex crime and child protection matters; managing large scale events such as high profile football matches, protests, major and critical incidents which included the Olympic Games, the London Riots and the largest terror attack seen in the UK since the 2005 London bombings.

With a passion for improving social mobility for the most disadvantaged, Lee joined Leeds East Academy in 2018 as the lead for Alternative Provision. During his time at Leeds East Academy he led transformational change, including:

  • Reducing serious behaviour incidents by 89% and fixed term exclusions by 100% within alternative provision.

  • Improving the attendance of alternative provision students to rates above the national average.

  • Bringing about a significant culture change, with the majority of students and parents reporting that they felt happy, safe and cared for.

  • Being instrumental in Leeds East Academy achieving a “Good” Ofsted judgement in May 2019, before going on to support the other two Trust academies secure “Good” judgements. Ofsted described the alternative provision functions of the Trust as a “well cared for and of a high priority”, “carefully supervised” and “strong”.

  • Lee also has non-executive director experience in the private sector from time served on the Leeds East Academy Local Accountability Board.

Lee was appointed as an Associate Assistant Principal for the Trust, responsible for the Strategic Leadership of Alternative Provision in September 2019. Lee’s role includes; driving the Trust’s strategic vision for alternative provision, the development and quality assurance of alternative provision at the three academies, the implementation of new systems and policies to improve standards and ensure external providers are working in collaboration to secure the Trust vision of all students being happy and safe at school, making outstanding progress in all subjects and developing the communication skills and personal confidence to fully prepare them to be successful leaders of the future.

Away from work, Lee enjoys camping, hiking, writing, and devoting time to his family.
